Winnie's Treasures

During our guided reading sessions, we are exploring books about different cultures to tie in with our inquiry of 'who we are'. Today we were reading a story called 'Nia's Hair', which is about a little girl from Tonga who took part in a hair cutting ceremony to pay respect to her Grandma that had recently passed away. We were very lucky to have our Teacher Aide Winnie in our class during this lesson and she was able to explain to us about why the hair cutting ceremony's are so significant in the Tongan culture. She also shared with us her special gifts that her Mother had given to her. This is all hand made and woven together out of flax. In the Tongan culture, you wear these when you are attending special events. Check out the pictures below.

Multiplication Battleships

Today in class, we played an awesome game called Multiplication Battleships! We each had to find a partner and build a barrier so they could not see our work. We had to draw three ships onto our squared bit of paper (all different sizes). Our partner then had to call out the grid references and we had to multiply the numbers together, write the answer in the square and yell out 'hit' or 'miss'. If they hit our boat, they would mark their sheet with a red pen and if they missed, they would mark it with a blue pen so that they could keep track of which numbers they had called out. The winner was the person that sunk all of their partner's boats first. This game was really fun and we hope we can play it again!

Goal Setting

We watched the 'Kid President's Guide to being more awesome' on YouTube and discussed ways that we can be more awesome this year. We then came up with some goals for the year that we hope to achieve. We designed our own set of 'wings' to display our goals, along with the quote "You never know how far you can fly until you spread your wings" this means that we will never know how good we can be at something until we have a go and try our best. We will be spreading our wings and flying high this year in Room 11!

Favourite Books

Here are some of our favourite books that we shared in our book sharing circles. How many of these books have you read? You can come into Room 11 and check out our 'Get your hands on a good book' display to see the reasons why we like these books.
